What to Expect
Making the appointment
Appointment requests can be submitted through phone call (please leave a message if nobody answers) or text message- please provide a brief summary of what the visit is for, how many pets we will be seeing,, your address, your preferred day and morning or afternoon preference
Due to the unpredictability of visits, traffic, and the need to minimize travel between appointments so that more pets receive care we require flexibility in the schedule. Arrival times for appointments are either 8-12pm or 1-4pm. If you need to reduce the window please let us know in advance and we may be able to accommodate
To secure an appointment you may need to leave a deposit of 25% of the first pet exam fee, this is refundable with 24 hours' notice unless there is a history of cancellations.
Preparing for the visit
We will email or text you a form to fill out so we understand your needs better prior to the appointment. On this form please list any other hospitals we need to contact for records prior to the appointment
We will need space to work with your pet so please ensure there is a cleared/clean space large enough for two people to work around your pet. Any outdoor spaces you would like us to work in must be enclosed and the work area free of feces.
If your pet is being seen for urinary or stool problems, please try to collect a sample before the visit- can be obtained up to 24 hours early for feces or 12 for urine but should be stored the fridge or at fridge equivalent temperatures in a closed container
-
Fecal samples should be at least 3 sugar cubes in size
-
Urine samples should be at least 1 tablespoon in volume and not absorbed into anything, floor samples are still acceptable as long as they were collected right after they were produced
If your pet is being seen for coughing or a problem that comes and goes, please try to obtain a video of the problem behavior
Day of the visit
On the day of the visit we will either call or text message you when we arrive at the appointment before yours and then again when our approximate arrival time is 20 minutes
Please ensure your pet is accessible for the visit.
-
For cats working with them in a bathroom or room that can be closed off and does not have things they can fit under
Most days your care team will include both the doctor and a technician/nurse. We will bring a scale, bag, blanket and tablet into the house with us. We will discuss your pets needs and preform an exam to determine the plan
We always try to handle pets with the least amount of stress possible. If your pet is too stressed, we may need to provide sedation medication and schedule another appointment to finish treatments.
If your pet requires medications, we carry a few select medications with us but most of the time we will provide a written prescription or submit the order through our online pharmacy partner Mixlab who provides next day service for most medications.
At the end of the visit we can process payment
End of life visits
We are first of all so sorry you are going through this very difficult time; it is always so hard to say goodbye to a loved one and we will do our best to make your pets passing as peaceful as possible.
If you would like to prepay for this visit you may, we can discuss aftercare options before we come to the house if desired.
When your care team arrives, we will do a brief exam if your pet is new to us and gather some information. In very rare circumstances we may decline the euthanasia (healthy young pets, medical problems that can generally be resolved, pets that have recently bitten someone unless state approval is acquired)
You will decide what your aftercare plan is if you did not prior to the visit. We will collect a signature from you for permission to proceed
Most pets receive premedication given under the skin, this can sting but is normally very well tolerated. It takes about 10 minutes to take effect, and your pet will be very sleepy
A needle or catheter will be placed in a vein, most likely a leg, and the injection of euthanasia solution will be administered
You may still spend time with your pet then either we can take them with us or the crematorium will pick them up. Either way your loved one will be treated with respect and care through the aftercare process
This is a typical euthanasia but please understand that different pets react to medications differently and some medical problems complicate the process. Your visit may not follow this exactly
